Wachira Mwangi is a self taught, digital artist, photographer and painter from Nairobi Kenya. He was raised in the slopes of Mt. Kenya. After finishing college and working for about 3 years, he apprenticed under British photographer David Beatty. David was instrumental in turning Wachira Mwangi into a professional who understood his own artistic journey.
Wachira Mwangi is greatly influenced by African mythology, on which he was raised on. His work aims to use African wisdom, perspectives and stories to tell the story of Humanity. He is motivated by the history of his people. The rich culture of the land and the long line of injustices that have plagued the land and and the deep spirituality of his ancestors.
It is through this work that he wishes to open up uncharted areas of the mind for the viewer, and communicate a global truth via a very local story.
His creative process involves writing a story as he hikes across his native land, sometimes up Mt. Kenya and sometimes to the old abandoned and vandalised shrines of his native tribe. Wachira Mwangi hold a Bachelors degree in Biochemistry (molecular biology and biotechnology) Having worked the industry for 3 years, he begun apprenticing under David Beatty, a British fasion photographer in Kenya. With him, Wachira worked on a number of magazine publications in which he worked as his assistant and photo retoucher. The experience was priceless as David had no reservations of what Art should be and encouraged free will on Wachira's part to create what was and still is yearning deep inside him to break out.
Wachira believes his education is a never ending process as he still learning today. The fact that he did not attend an artschool has been a bit of an advantage as he is always eager to learn. Coming in as an outsider makes him super eager much like a child and it also kills over confidence and the tendency to take ones skills for granted.
His personal projects are also part of his education as he works with a team of artists to bring his work to life. You can see his latest projects on my website www.wachiramwangi.com
