Truth is in the eye of the beholder

The history of print collages is closely related to the emergence of the mass media. Ever since the late nineteenth century, artists have created collages mirroring the stream of images produced by the mass media and the confusion this flux brings about. Today, many artists reflecting on the flood of images make use of moving images: video for instance, or computer animations. Bianca Runge's powerful work, however, shows traditional print collages to have lost nothing of their cogency.

Runge constructs her collages in layers, each time cutting away part of the subject matter. The remainder is then combined with other images. Skin, for example, is cut away, so that only the outlines of human shapes remain. Runge's approach makes for perplexing shifts of identity and meaning within the different layers of the collages: shifts that ultimately create a new reality. And yet, because of her unerring feel for colour, structure and composition, Runge's images are as seductive as those turned out by the mass media.
