Mathieu Jean is an American artist based in Connecticut whose distinctive paintings have earned him international recognition and a devoted following among collectors, including rock legends Ringo Starr and Matt Sorum of Guns N' Roses, The Cult and Velvet Revolver.
Working primarily in acrylic, oil bars and graphite. Mathieu creates raw, visceral canvases that feel excavated from the subconscious. His paintings evoke the primal energy of ancient cave art-bold, elemental, and alive with movement—while remaining unmistakably contemporary. Mathieu often refers to these works as "excavations of the mind." He often applies pigment and charcoal directly with his bare hands, allowing texture, gesture, and intuition to guide the work. The result is a body of paintings that pulse with vivid color, deliberate strokes, and a tactile immediacy that bridges the primordial and the personal.
