Risa Korris

I’m a painter and photographer based in New York City. My works begin with photography – influenced by my career in film and television. For subjects I am drawn to classically trained modern dancers from major companies Momix, Pilobolus, Julliard, Lar Lubovich, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Julliard, or Ballet Nacionale de Espagna. The latter companies I photographed during six months living in Spain as an Edward Gonzalez Grant winner. My photographs rely on the skill and precision of the dancers to run through performances so that I can distill and freeze moments in time. The settings are dramatic landscapes such as New England fields, Southwestern horizons, Hampton swimming pools, Madrid rooftops or coasts of the Canary Islands. These collaborations are true “DanceSapes”.

The second series of paintings are called FruitScapes – I search for fruits on the vines and photograph them against their native horizons. The painting series began in Litchfield County CT where the local farm saved their ripest and most natural looking crops - apples in Fall gourds in winter and corn in summer.. The series continued as I traveled and gathered subjects from local farmers markets in Palm Springs, Santa Fe, Lisbon, Rio, Cape Town and Marrakech.
