Originally from Bulgaria, trained at European School of Economics, and now based in East Sussex, Didi’s paintings explore the relationships between light and landscape, color and space, surface and depth.
Inspired by the east coast beaches, hidden corners of Sussex and weather-beaten fishing boats, her process involves exploring, photographing and painting.
Didi’s work, broadly speaking is abstract, although all her paintings are observed from life and executed in oils. Her interpretation of the various subjects which she depicts, often results in quite a different style of painting. In her most recent landscapes, brushes have given way to a pallet knife and detail has been moved aside for a more direct response. The application of paint in these works shows a real involvement with the material, resulting in paintings that are both rich and exciting.
Didi’s new series of blue abstract paintings combine a dramatic use of colour and form, capturing the intensity of light, atmosphere and serenity in the beach unique environment. The sea provides changeable scenes of bright blue skies, moody silvery mist and cloud forms and, of course, a lot of sunlight. Indeed the English Channel is an inspiring destination for both naturalists...
