Marble is the supreme art challenge. The more it is worked on, the more sensitive and fragile it gets. No mistakes are forgiven. This is why the most valued sculptures come from a single block of marble, crafted to perfection.
When there are no tool marks and sculpture seems molded and not chiseled, when an idea meets material and an artist confronts time, when marble gets to be so thin that it becomes transparent… this is when a sculpture becomes something else. This is when a sculpture becomes synergy of the supreme natural material and unlimited time, great knowledge and extravagant idea, finest expertise and deepest emotions.
This is when the work of art is born.

Mateja Mijatovic is a Serbian-Italian sculptor, born in Belgrade in 1977. He graduated sculpture from the Accademia di Belle Arti (Carrara, Italy), in the class of professor Pier Giorgio Balocchi. He currently lives and works in the marble city, Arandjelovac, situated at the foot of the famous marble mountain, Vencac in Serbia.
