Tomoko Hokyo is a London-based Japanese artist whose practice explores the intersection of natural materials, traditional craft, and memory. She studied Nihonga (traditional Japanese painting) at Joshibi University of Art and Design, where she developed a deep interest in mineral pigments and the origins of materials.
A pivotal shift in her artistic direction came after living in Kazakhstan for five years, where the vast landscapes and symbolic textile patterns inspired her to explore abstract, geometric forms that reflect both nature and human culture.
Since 2020, she has been studying Japanese cloisonné enamel techniques under traditional artisans, drawn to the transformations that occur between fire, glass, and metal.
This interest is also rooted in her maternal family history, where her grandfather worked as a glazier (glass installer) and earlier ancestors were traditional gunsmiths.
Her work has been exhibited in Japan and the UK, and she has led workshops for children in Japan and Kazakhstan. Her works are included in museum and institutional collections.
2007 Graduated with a BA in Fine Arts, majoring in Japanese Painting, Joshibi University of Art and Design
