John Brownlow

I'm a professional screenwriter, film director, producer and musician, but my first love has always been photography.

I began as a street and documentary photographer, working alongside the 'grand old man of Boston documentary' Roswell Angier. Street photography led me to urban landscape and urban landscape to rural landscape. I've also worked in portraiture.

I work in all mediums - digital, stitched digital composites, 35mm, medium format and 4x5. I have a love for analog processes and a full working darkroom, plus a collection of amazing vintage cameras, but I also use cutting edge techniques to produce images which would be impossible to achieve using conventional means. But the tools are always secondary to the image.

I'm not particularly interested in making beautiful pictures -- I'd much rather making interesting ones. But sometimes they're both.

Oxford University 1983-1987. I did a year of mathematics then changed to English.
