Kate Marsden

Kate Marsden, b. 1978, lives in South London. She is a West Sussex born/London based artist, with a background in Fashion & Textile Design and Surface Pattern Design.
Kate works across a range of media but predominantly painting and textiles. Her pieces explore everyday items and objects, and are increasingly inspired by thoughts, emotions, childhood and her experiences of grief, combining figurative and abstract imagery. A desire to alter the viewer’s perception of her subject matter has long been her desired outcome, whether this be via the subversion of a traditional subject, or the beautification of something considered to be ugly or undesirable.
Kate’s work can be seen in private collections as well as commercial commissions including at the refurbished South London arts centre, Fairfield Halls.

Kate has seen her work featured at the Royal Academy of Arts as part of their RAted range of up-and-coming British designer/makers.
She has has recently exhibited in a wide range of shows across the UK including Lido Stores Margate, ArtCan, Sprout Arts, Carshalton Artists and Oaks Park Artists and she is a member of the Oaks Park Printmakers Group.

Kate’s creative journey started in the mid 1990s when she studied Fashion & Textiles at Lincoln College of Art. Following many years working in a corporate environment, she studied a range of short courses at a variety of institutions including Chelsea College of Art and Central Saint Martins.
For some time, Kate ran a successful design and illustration business (Made By Mrs M) specialising in fabric design and architectural illustration.
Her fine art practice has grown over recent years and became her focus during the pandemic. She enjoys working with a range of materials including acrylics, printmaking and textiles, returning to her long-term love for this media.
Kate’s work continues to evolve, retaining her aim to encourage people to see things differently and appreciate the beauty in the everyday.
