Deborah Alexander

Born 1959 in Perth Australia
to Dutch Father and English Mother. I engage with paint as a material and a metaphor, applying each layer to expose or cover self and the constructed 'persona'

My interest lies in expressing and discovering self where language is inadequate. I attempt to articulate my state of being through art by creating an inner landscape through the process of building up layers of paint, and then scraping away some of painted surface. The resulting symbolic markings are then obscured by glaze or left clear for interpretation.

The subject of the enunciating - the actual person trying to communicate in language - is impossible to represent; there is no sign which can sum up my entire being, who I am.
