Rodrigo Lemus

I grew up and developed in an artistic environment since I came to the world. My father was a film photographer and my mother a sculptor and painter.

There was no way to escape art, wherever I moved it was there. Art surrounded me in many forms and expressions. Music, food, bullfights, cinema, literature and mainly painting.

I became fond of photography from a very young age without really understanding what I was getting into and that's how my photographic career began.

At first I sought to capture everything around me as a kind of diary. Later, I tried to invent my own worlds and I began to look for locations, spaces and actors who wanted to inhabit my worlds and tell everything I had in my head through them.

My first photography lessons were taken by the teacher Manuel Álvarez Bravo. Don Manuel is one of the most important and famous photographers in contemporary photography.

Surrounded by friends such as Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, José Clemente Orozco, Tina Modotti, Henri Cartier-Bresson or Ansel Adams among others, he also had the most exciting life knowledge that any teacher anywhere could have and was willing to share.

He was my personal teacher for 5 years that I had the opportunity to live with him until shortly before his death on October 19, 2002

He introduced me to personalities of the stature of Héctor García, Graciela Iturbide, Enrique Bostelman, Mariana Yampolsky and the Great Leo Mátiz.

All of them in a more social than school environment. In meetings or meals where he always took me into account.

Later it was through painting and friendships that Renaissance painting fascinated me and it was when I began to apply the knowledge and teachings of the paintings of the great masters of the brush through the lens to photography.

In reality, it has been outside the institutions where I have been able to learn more about photography than in any of the courses or workshops that I have taken.
