Friso Van Dijk

My artistic practice (Sub Spatial Studio) started as a more free form continuation of my studies and work as an architect. I have a fascination for shadows and light as generators of atmosphere within space. From an initial investigation during my studies this developed into an artistic practice. Which is mostly concerned with processes of subtraction and addition and a subsequent reversal of the role of figure and ground within the work. These topics are explored through a variety of media, from drawing to sculpture. I define my works as Micro-Architectures, their most common trait is controlled shadow (or shading) through linear interventions.

My practice is positioned interdisciplinary and thus inspired by two directions, conceptual architecture, its drawings and notational systems (Rossi, Michael Webb, Lebbeus Woods, Kahn, Libeskind, Gordon Matta Clark, early Hadid, Portoghesi) and on the art side: the minimalism movement (Agnes Martin, Mark Rothko, Sol LeWitt, Imi Knoebel).
