Helen Brough is a London-based contemporary artist working across oil on aluminium, works on paper, reverse glass painting and illuminated glass sculpture. Her practice explores colour, light, landscape and perception, moving between the immediacy of painted surfaces and the physical depth, transparency and reflectivity of glass.
Her oil paintings on aluminium use the smooth, reflective surface to intensify colour and create shifting spatial relationships, while her works on paper offer a more intimate and spontaneous extension of the same concerns. Glass has become an important part of her practice, both as a material and as a way of thinking about image-making.
In her reverse glass paintings, the image is constructed in layers and in reverse order, creating a tension between control and uncertainty. Her illuminated glass sculptures extend this exploration into three dimensions, using painted and fired glass with light to create changing relationships between colour, transparency and space.
Brough studied at Chelsea School of Art and has exhibited widely in the UK, Europe, the USA, Korea and Taiwan. Her awards and funding include the Prix de Rome, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, QEST, (Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust) Arts Council England and the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers bursary.
Her work is held in private, corporate and museum collections including the Cantor Fitzgerald Collection, the William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation, the Joslyn Art Museum, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts and Two Trees, DUMBO, Brooklyn.
