Sylvie Hamou is a self-taught contemporary painter who was born and raised in New Zealand to French and Swiss parents and then lived in France as an adult before settling in Switzerland. This cultural melting pot influences Hamou’s minimalist approach to geometric constructivism and abstraction. Fuelled by her love of design, she identifies herself as an abstract, geometric and hard-edge painter. Her bold and minimalist compositions follow the codes of concrete and non-objective art evolving around her quest for harmony and balance and her intrinsic sensitivity to colour. In addition to exploring the notions of space and volume inherent to her geometrical abstraction predecessors, she also incorporates interesting texture and signature dot work.
International success
Over the last decade, Sylvie Hamou has exhibited widely both in Switzerland and abroad (France, USA, Italy, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg...). Her work was showcased at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Japan during the AJAC exhibition in 2016, le Grand Palais in Paris in 2017 and JFK...
Self-taught artist
Over the last ten years, Sylvie Hamou's exhibition schedule has taken her all over the world and she has participated in solo and group shows in Switzerland, France, and throughout Europe as well as the USA and in particular Miami / Florida during the Art Basel seasons.
After a successful selection in an international online art competition in 2014, she exhibited a collection of paintings at JFK airport, New York via Embler Art gallery.
In 2016, she was invited to join Open Art Code, an association of independent artists curated by Studio Abba and was a part of numerous group exhibits held in prestigious venues around the world including Italy, Monaco, the Grand Palais in Paris and th Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum...
She was extremely honoured to be included in the international juried selection of two art fairs (The Other Art Fair) in New York in Nov 2017 and in London in 2018. She will be back TOAF in October 2025.
