Brazil
Identity, borders and crossings portrayed through human figures, animals and abstractions are structuring points of Luciano Cian's research. An image construction that dialogues with his personal experience of origin – and with the lack of feeling of belonging. Throughout an almost nomadic childhood, the Brazilian artist got to know different landscapes, people and cultures. Most of his family left the triple border between Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia, leaving Mato Grosso do Sul and heading to the interior of São Paulo. From then on, Luciano Cian lived in several Brazilian cities and regions - including, among others, the Amazon region - until he settled in Rio de Janeiro. Based on these multiple experiences, the artist invites us to think about the idea of belonging, mixing signs from Latin American cultures with contemporary graphic elements. His work develops different visualities of the creative force, regardless of a defined border, since all of our ancestry at a given moment is collective. Luciano Cian's figures talk about the importance of dialogue, the confluence of origins and customs, proposing a form of connection and bridge between the continent's diverse manifestations - bringing influences from the cultures that are part of Brazilian identity. In mixed media, drawing, sculpture, linocut, acrylic or oil on canvas/wood, his characters encompass different ethnicities, with empowerment and gestural power. The highlighted line of the designs incorporates a simple color palette, with great contrasts.
