Pedro Abreu's photography and paintings originate from everyday life and the experiences he remembers.
He draws inspiration from his immediate surroundings and shoots just at the right moment to capture the mystical momentum rather than the narrative.
His motives are of unknown protagonists at non-places. In the moment of taking a picture, the situations seem to arise spontaneously, which in combination with his working methods makes Pedro Abreu photography authentic.
His documentary character is undeniable.
Pedro has a clear distinction from photojournalism because his photographs incorporate artistic composition with a shifted and often non-linear focus.
Where the street has a clear narrative, his personal view is more abstract and even opaque at times.
Context is deliberately absent or left vague, allowing the viewer to create their own reality.
Following Pedro Abreu photography is always fascinating; his work is spontaneous, mysterious, intimate, witty, and sad at the same time.

After studying painting and graphic design at Cooper Union, New York City, and Rhode Island School of Design, he earned his BFA at the Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture. Pedro Abreu began his photography career in 1974 working for local NY magazines.
"I feel so lucky to have studied with some of Arts prominent teachers, that included; Will Barnet, Dore Ashton, Hans Haacke, Don Kuntz, Herbert Lubalin, Jay Maysel, Arnold Newman, Gary Winogrand, Jack Steward, Joel Meyerowitz." With this combination of friends and teachers, Pedro was able to become the photographer that he aspired to be; capturing the light, color, and gesture found in everyday life. This unique vision kept him busy for over 35 years shooting photographs for annual reports, magazine covers, jazz, and pop albums, commercial advertising, and more for an array of U.S.based clients. He continues to sell his prints, which can be found in private, corporate, and museum collections. Pedro continues to focus on his personal photographing and painting work.
At the moment Pedro is working on his photographic book project, "Ghosts in the Streets"
