What inspires my artwork is the day to day moments and emotions that African people experience, and capturing those moments and emotions in sculpture. The women and men symbolise strong, beautiful people who carry their dignity with pride and confidence despite all the challenges they may be facing in their everyday lives. I also like to capture the joyful moments I experienced in childhood. I do rhino pieces so that I can bring to light the issues around poaching and impending extinction. In general, I like to present the beauty of nature and wildlife.
After completing my high school in 2003, my father realised my love for art and enrolled me at Mzilikazi Arts and Crafts Centre in 2004 where I studied art for 1½ years. For the first 6 months at the school, we were rotated through stone sculpting, pottery, ceramic sculpting, painting and sign painting. I was more interested in ceramic sculpting because of its flexibility as an art medium.
The following year I concentrated on ceramic sculpting to improve my skill and knowledge with clay.
In June 2005 my training ended. The school offered me a studio at the premises to continue with my art career. I stayed there for a further 1½ years. During that period, I was introduced to metal sculpting and I began working on bigger pieces and my work got better. I exhibited some of my work at the school gallery until I left the school and did freelancing.
In September 2018, I took part in the CSA regional competition of which I won the Ndebele clay award, and in November 2018, I had my first solo exhibition at the Association of Arts Pretoria. The opening was very successful. My work was highly appreciated and out of 15 pieces, 6 sold on the first day.
2019 May I took part in The CSA region exhibition and my piece won the coribrick permanent collection award
The exposure resulted in me being invited to show some of my pieces at the Hermanus FynArts Ceramic Exhibition in June 2019 and at the Motmot Gallery in Parkhurst, Johannesburg.
I have also been invited to participate in a collaborative project with artist Nici Brockwell ____.
