James Smessaert

Biography

Born, November 3rd 1963 in Evanston, IL.

Moved to Wisconsin in 1965 and continue to call that home.

I’m constantly amazed by the connections I find across a multitude of disciplines. I’m interested in the concept of creativity in all its manifestations, in how people create in many different disciplines, and in their daily lives. I’ve been sustained by the languages of art.

This interest with interdisciplinary studies has probably also guided my choice of medium and process. I have gravitated toward wood construction, assemblage, collage and layering. These methods allow me to combine, overlap, and juxtapose a multitude of interests.

Received a bachelor's degree in Fine Art from Cardinal Stritch University in 1991.
Returned to receive a Teaching Certificate in 2001.
Have worked as an Art Teacher at Wauwatosa East High for the past 20 years.
