Harkrader attended the Mountain Lake Symposiums and Workshops in the 80s. These historic conferences featured luminaries; including Sally Mann, John Cage, Suzi Gablik, Howard Finster, Wayne Thiebaud and others. These salon-like workshops had a profound effect on Harkrader’s emerging art.
Harkrader attended the 2007 Web Flash Festival & Conference, hosted at the Centre Pompidou, Paris France. In 2011, Roanoke Valley Sister Cities selected Harkrader for an artist residency in Opole, Poland which included a dozen artists from Eastern and Western Europe.

Private and Independent Studies:
Mountain Lake Symposiums and Workshops 1982-1989. These historic conferences led by foremost artists and critics included Kuspit, Cage, Kass, Greenberg, Leenhardt, Miller, Sonnier, Thiebaud and others. The workshops provided valuable insight from a rare assembly of experts. Harkrader's series, ”Mountain Lake Drawings From Life" portrayed those experts and participants.
Mid-career professional painter and sculpturist, his work has been represented by RedSky Gallery, Charlotte; Aaron Gallery, Washington, DC; Edge Gallery, Philadelphia; and LinDor Gallery, Roanoke, Virginia. Online, his work appears on You Tube, Saatchi, and was one of Irving Sandler’s Artist Files as an early online exhibitor.
