Murhaf Obeid

I am a Syrian Refugee and practicing artist. I arrived in Australia in August 2016 as a permanent resident, and there is much I have witnessed and felt through my experience of war and escape that I wish to express through my work. The lens of suffering and pain is dark, but yet in a new society like Australia there is also much to celebrate. The hand across the ocean that has been extended to me and my family also fills me with deep gratitude and hope. My art captures this bitter-sweet quality and allows me to connect to many people about the rich themes of human experience. Through art I believe more compassion, universal understanding and hope can be achieved. I hope to work to bridge the forces of intolerance and mistrust through my art, and to contribute to my new home as best I can
