Ryan Mclay

Ryan McLay born in 1977 in Leduc, Canada is currently based in Santiago, Chile. For his art practice, he is primarily a photographer, but he also explores other art mediums such as digital media, video, and sculpture. Ryan McLay received his formal training focusing on sculpture from the Alberta University of Arts (formerly Alberta College of Art & Design) in 2002 which he received his "Bachelor's of Fine Arts". With no formal training in photography, he was exposed to many photographers while studying. Photographers that greatly impacted how he sees the world are fellow Canadians such as Edward Burtynsky, Fred Herzog, and Jeff Wall. Looking outside Canada he admired such photographers as Andreas Gursky, David Hockney, Cindy Sherman, and Magnum group. This in turn shaped his photography practice by focusing on themes such as urban decay, postmodernism, and industrial featurelessness as his backdrop. From 2007 to the present he has lived outside of Canada. His life abroad started with South Korea, followed by Australia, Kuwait, Costa Rica, Qatar, and now his current location Chile.
