"Darkness is a material I carve with my blade of light to reveal the people I portray."
Kevin Feriani — known as The Poet of Light — is an Italian fine-art photographer born in 1975. His practice began in 1988, and across nearly four decades has evolved into one of the most recognizable and uncompromising visual languages in contemporary portrait photography.
He works from a single room: a living space converted into a studio, with a black backdrop, a handful of flash units, and a vintage wind machine. No professional infrastructure. No elaborate sets. What others build in post-production, Feriani constructs entirely in camera — in real time, through the precise choreography of light against absolute darkness. Post-production rarely exceeds fifteen minutes per image.
His method is one of radical subtraction. Darkness, in his work, is not a background — it is the raw material. Light does not illuminate it; it carves through it, extracting presence, vulnerability, and the inherent dignity of the people he portrays. Ordinary individuals encountered in everyday life become, under his lens, figures of timeless intensity — sculpted, not photographed.
This approach places Feriani in direct conversation with the great tradition of pictoria...
