b. 1991 Mexico City, Mexico | Lives and works in Dallas, TX Mayte Alquicira is a Mexican-born, Dallas-based mixed media artist whose work explores the balance between structure and surrender through abstraction. Influenced by the women of Abstract Expressionism, she approaches each piece as both a visual and emotional study in control, curiosity, and expansion. Raised between Mexico City and Morelia, Alquicira developed an early fascination with color and the way it communicates emotion beyond words. Her academic path led her to study Arts and Culture in Rome, where the convergence of classical balance and contemporary freedom shaped her understanding of art as both reflection and release. Her process merges intention with intuition. Each work begins with intuitive color exploration that evolves into deliberate choices, creating layers of acrylics, inks, pastels and oil sticks over canvas. These layers embody how she challenges her own internal rhythm, learning to let the medium lead while maintaining a sense of direction. In recent months, she has begun incorporating fabric and hand stitching as a tribute to her mother’s craft, weaving memory, texture, and tactile emotion into her practice. Alongside her artistic work, Alquicira maintains a deep connection to yoga, which informs her approach to balance as an ongoing and shifting state. Both art and yoga exist for her as acts of calibration, where control meets patience, planning meets awareness, and vision meets the willingness to let go. Through her art, Alquicira seeks to evoke energy, curiosity, and expansion. Her paintings invite viewers to experience that dynamic equilibrium, the living tension where order and freedom coexist, and where growth unfolds through the dialogue between the two.
