My approach to painting can be compared to that of an archaeologist surveying a site. It is this aspect of my practice that I am most devoted to.
My recent work is focused on found and photographed pieces of organic matter. These are images of deceased creatures or debris that have evolved over time---things that were once living and breathing or part of another entity altogether. I am interested in this altered state of things, placing the subject in suspended animation and attempting to reference a place between knowledge and wonder. In making repeated renderings and by concentrating on specific details, it is my goal to understand my own personal connection and fascination with these life-forms and how they relate to my memories and experiences with the natural world.
