Steel & Stone

Steel & Stone is a collection about the architecture of cities seen by daylight: facades, rooftops, signs and streets transformed into rhythm, line and color. Much of the work was made in New York and Washington DC, the cities where I work, alongside others I have photographed around the world. I often photograph from above or from a distance, using long lenses to compress buildings into patterns and to isolate details that usually go unnoticed: a red neon sign against grey brick, a row of yellow taxis waiting in line, the geometry of windows repeating floor after floor. These images explore the tension between the monumental and the everyday, between the permanence of stone and the constant movement of urban life. Color is used sparingly, so that a single tone can carry the whole composition. Steel & Stone is the daytime counterpart to my Nocturnes collection: the same cities, the same fascination, seen in a different light.
