Bio
Elizabeth Katherine Porcel was born and raised in Long Island, NY. She studied at the Pratt Institute, completed an AAS in Mortuary Science at Nassau Community College. After working in the Funeral Service Industry for a few years she moved to Atlanta, GA for love. There she completed her BFA (summa cum laude) in painting at Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta. Her young interest in craft, color and biology still influence her work.
As a child, her mother took her to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see tapestries and early Christian Art. When she was at Pratt she spent hours in the library perusing The Thinking Eye by Paul Klee. Other artistic influences include Helen Frankenthaler, Joseph Albers, Henri Rousseau, George Seurat, Mary Kelly and Lynda Benglis to name a few.
Porcel worked as an apprentice for a local sculptor when in High School going on to study drawing under Herbert Beerman. While studying mortuary science she worked in the shop of Irene Heckel-Volpe, a teddy bear artist, acquiring some fiber arts skills. She has recently begun learning additional fiber skills from Leisa Rich. While at SCAD Meg Aubrey and Larry Jens Anderson were the most influential professors.
