This piece was sparked by a real moment—an uninvited rabbit chewing through a tulip bed outside the studio window. The encounter was cute, as rabbits are, but they’re also invasive, unrepentant, and oddly cinematic when looking for a meal. We all have the tendency to project human attributes onto th...

In the hills of Western Pennsylvania, there exists a specialized kind of madness: The Bloomin Fool—a painter who gardens and a gardener who paints. For years, he believed he was the architect of the garden, only to discover that Mother Nature is truly in charge. She doesn't take notes, she doesn't follow a brief, and she certainly doesn't care for the garden designs of man. Working in the studio, the Bloomin Fool faces the challenges posed by Mother Nature with his brush. The work is a satirical look at the secret lives of the elements, diseases, insects, and creatures that conspire against him and his brush with gardening. While the Bloomin Fool is busy with the rose and the trowel, they are busy with their own mysterious agendas, ensuring he knows he is truly the fool to try to win the battle. His only revenge is capturing them in the act through his art. With the application of glazes and layers, he achieves the depth and richness of oil using acrylic paint. This process allows him a brief and fleeting victory documenting the "Garden Tails" that unfold daily in the soil, sunlight, and shade. He remains a Bloomin Fool—armed with a rose and a paintbrush, until the day that he will return to the garden forever.
