Born in 1957 in Ukraine, I worked for many years as a designer of wedding and evening gowns. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I had to close my business and began searching for a new creative direction. This journey led me first to painting and later to Fabric Texture Art.
Fabric Texture Art is an artistic practice in which fabric is transformed into sculptural, textured compositions on canvas. By folding, draping, twisting, and layering carefully selected dense fabrics, I create works with depth, volume, movement, and a strong sense of physical presence.
This technique is deeply connected to my background in fashion and textile design. After years of working with fabric as a material for clothing, I began exploring it as a medium for fine art. What fascinates me most is the element of unpredictability: I know how each work begins, but never exactly how it will develop. The fabric responds differently each time, allowing the final form to emerge through the process itself.
My process begins by shaping and composing the fabric according to the intended form. It is then treated with specialized hardening materials that transform the soft textile into a durable sculptural surface. Once hardened, the surface is carefully worked and refined — either smoothed or given a more pronounced texture, depending on the artistic intention of the piece. Color may then be introduced through painting when it serves the composition and enhances its visual character.
The result is a one-of-a-kind sculptural artwork in which fabric, texture, form, and color come together to create a sense of depth and movement.
