Kris Coolens

The strong pull to always create highly figurative work challenges my aim to depict the opposite. It is a visual journey of stripping away the ego to uncover the authentic source within.
My paintings are not portraits as such. When I portray something, it is the understated and introspective posture of the figures, and they reflect my own introspective quest.

Painting, for me personally, foremost arises from an undeniable necessity and inexplicable urge. I'm not doing this as a conscious choice
