The term "banana" refers to fruits with soft, sweet pulp that can be eaten raw. However, there are varieties of cultivation, with harder pulp and firmer, greener skin, generally known as plantains, in Spanish, plantains or plantains, in Portuguese, or plantains, in English, which are consumed cooked (baked, boiled or fried), constituting the staple food of many populations in tropical regions. Bananas form in bunches at the top of the "pseudo-stems" that arise from a true underground stem (rhizome or corm) whose longevity reaches 15 years or more. After maturation and harvesting of the bunch of bananas, the pseudostem dies, subsequently giving rise to a new pseudostem.
