Hyeonsook Heo

My works are a record of the history of everyday lives in times gone by, encapsulated in her main theme of “houses”. As someone who witnessed the rapid industrialization of the country, her works, which was first inspired by the memories of her childhood home that vanished in the name of urban development, chronicle the changing society and times by contemplating the relationship between people and homes.

Hyeonsook Heo, with an undergraduate and a graduate degree in Painting from Sookmyung Women’s University, has 15 solo exhibitions and multiple group exhibitions under her belt. She was awarded first prize in a competition held by Gyeomjae Jeongseon Art Museum in 2014, and was part of Cheongju Art Studio’s 11th and Seongbuk Cultural Foundation’s 1st artist cohort. Heo has been working on a variety projects in association with multiple public art museums in South Korea such as SeMA Biennale Mediacity Seoul, Seoul Museum of Art, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art’s open storage, Daejeon Museum of Art, Chengju Museum of Art, Busan Cultural Foundation, Seongbuk Cultural Foundation, and Dobong Foundation for Arts and Culture. She has also been active abroad; she was part of Hipermerc’ art in Barcelona, Spain in 2016, was one of the artists for the Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C.’s 2019 open call, and was recently one of the selected artists in International SUMUK Biennale’s promotional exhibition held in the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
