I am a self taught ceramic artist and potter living in Devon in the United Kingdom. I became a potter after working as a photojournalist and documentary photographer for fifteen years. ()
I decided to change my life after being diagnosed with a brain tumour; I was operated on to remove part of it in March 2014 and felt, during my recovery, the work I was doing in and around conflict situations would not be possible anymore since the operation has left me far less aware and without my balance.
I fell in to ceramics during my recovery and have never looked back. It has completely taken hold of me and is developing in to a medium that I use to relate to the world and myself.
As I said, I am self taught. I am not formerly educated in the Arts nor in photography. I am the son of a farming family and originally studied at agricultural college. You could say I fell in to photography and now ceramics.
My work is loosely thrown on an old treadle wheel and I try to combine traditional techniques with a contemporary feel. My love and interest in Abstract Art and Expressionism plays an important part of my decoration and I am presently experimenting in form. Although I like my pots to be functional and to be used every day; I am interested in exploring the sculptural side of clay far beyond its practical use.
