When painting portraits Tom’s natural interest in his subjects allows him to produce canvasses that are imbued with subtle detail and resonate with personality. They are usually portrayed as life size so that the viewer can connect more easily with the emotional intention of the work.
His more general figurative work allows him to introduce elements inspired by poetry and classical literature rather than focusing solely on the personality of the sitter. It also gives an opportunity to focus on the physicality of the figure in paint and how paint is used.
Whilst being a confirmed painter he sustains his interest in the blurring of boundaries between disciplines with recent drawings referencing archaeology and geology, and mixed media work relating to memory, nostalgia and childhood.
Currently living and working in London, Tom also has links with the west of England having studied at Bath Spa University and exhibited in Bristol, Bath and Somerset. After completing a Fine Art Masters degree at the Cass school of Art Tom focused predominantly on portraiture and figurative oil painting. More recently Tom’s practice has expanded to include still life painting and drawing and some small sculpture.
Tom regularly shows his work in group exhibitions including the Royal Academy summer exhibition, the RWA annual exhibition, the Pastel Society, the Threadneedle Prize exhibition as well as curated exhibitions such as ‘The figure and the book’ at the Royal Commonwealth Society and ‘Autumn almanac’ at the Coningsby Gallery.
