I am a Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture, painting, and objects. My practice explores structure, material transformation, and the tension between control and unpredictability.
I am interested in the moment when a controlled form begins to acquire a life of its own. My works often begin with simple geometric structures, defined materials, or deliberately established conditions, which are then subjected to processes of accumulation, fracture, erosion, movement, or chance.
In his sculptural practice, plaster, concrete, metal, mineral compounds, and found elements are used to examine the relationship between constructed form and physical intervention. In painting, this investigation takes a more fluid direction, where layers, marks, and the movement of material produce singular, irreproducible states.
Across different media, Kostychev approaches each work as a temporary concentration of something larger: a unique configuration that emerges from the interaction between structure, process, and chance.
