Lance Dawes is best known for his work as a documentary and editorial photographer. Dawes began shooting skateboarders and misfits as a teen, while becoming a sponsored skateboarder by the legendary Dogtown skateboards. In 1990 he attended film school at University of San Francisco while working in the darkroom at Thrasher Magazine. In 1992 Dawes founded Slap
Magazine, where he was the editor, art director and chief photographer until 2009. Dawes was instrumental in documenting the San Francisco skate scene in the early 90's and has relentlessly continued to shoot skateboarding around the world over the past 20 years.

His work has appeared in countless campaigns and major publications, from ESPN, The Washington Post, The Associated Press, Getty Images, Warner Music, Atlantic Records, Fossil Watches, Panasonic, Boost Mobile, Vans, Nike, Juxtapoz Magazine, Flywheels, and Skateboarder Magazine.

Lance Dawes (1970) was born in Silver Spring, Md., raised in Washington DC, and lives in


Burbank, Ca. He is currently shooting a campaign for SPY Optic, a regular contributor to ESPN,and will be exhibiting new work this winter at Feroz Gallery in Bonn, Germany.

Dawes has exhibited his work across the globe, his most recent exhibitions include the Vans Syndicate traveling photo show “Pave The Way,” “Casting By” at the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival, along with “Twenty”, which he also curated at New Image Art in Los Angeles.
