Currently, my paintings ape classic still-life, focusing on objects of imported bric-a-brac that have lost their sense of exoticism. I've been particularly drawn to miniature cacti and their brightly coloured pots. The surreal, totemic shapes of the plants themselves echo the phallic grandstanding of monumental artworks in history. The pots often feature pastiched desert landscapes and abstracted cactus shapes creating an amusing visual repetition. I find inspiration in the many small absurdities that contemporary globalised culture presents us with on a daily basis, and the mystery possessed by the small objects people use in their homes to transcend their surroundings.
