Cindy Zhan

My work is inspired by what I see in daily life, or from a momentary splash of imagination. Painting is a way to express my thoughts, my dreams, to show the beauty in the world as I see it. When I was 5 years old I started painting in Chinese mediums of watercolor and ink. Later I expanded to oils, acrylic and other media. In my current work I employee a fusion of styles and methods, using both rough and fine brush strokes, with novel combinations of pigments to render the images in my imagination. The world and thinking are diverse, and my work reflects that. It can be concrete or abstract, bold and colorful, or simple and clear. The work and its inspiration create the technique. I refuse for my art to be limited by rules or conventions. If you need to define me, then "No style is my style".My greatest inspiration is also my young son, who is blind and suffers from cerebral palsy. I hope someday he will be able to see my paintings and what inspired them, because the world is so colorful.

I began painting at age 5 and won my first art award at age 10. I study the works of both great masters and unknown contemporary artists whose expressive technique inspire me.
