Katarzyna Sienkiewicz – born in 1991 in Hajnówka, a representative of the Belarusian national minority in Poland, a visual artist and poet writing in Belarusian and Polish. She mainly focuses on painting and works in wall polychrome conservation. She currently lives and creates in Lublin.
My mission is the development and promotion of Belarusian culture through artistic means, which in painting so far has been primarily expressed through the intermedia imitation of folk textiles. I covertly smuggle handwoven fabrics made by my grandmother into contemporary art galleries, juxtaposing them with my own painterly interpretation. By doing so, I aim to elevate the status of Belarusian folk art, even in the eyes of Belarusians themselves, who have often been instilled with a sense of inferiority regarding their cultural heritage, especially in relation to the East and West.
A graduate of artistic textiles at the Artur Grottger Secondary School of Fine Arts in Supraśl (2011), she defended her degree in painting at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin (2017).
