Roy And Lucy Hughes

We are two artists that just happen to be husband and wife and we work both collaboratively and in isolation. When we collaborate, we genuinely collaborate, sometimes to the extent that we can be working on the same piece at the same time. And we are very different artists and that fusion is very creative and produces exciting images.
Lucy loves to stimulate the senses. Colour and texture are particularly important. Lucy likes colours that you begin to imagine you can smell or taste. At times it’s hedonistic, euphoric and trance-like.
Lucy uses the finest materials, to create colour and texture. By using Japanese glass beads, sometimes gold and silver, she creates paths representing paths through life, challenges, decisions, feelings, concepts.
Sometimes Lucy can be more literal, but that is relative. It may mean that pieces are less abstract and more graphic in form. Lucy’s art is about the human condition and what brings it joy. Touching the human spirit.
Roy is driven by story telling and communication. Roy loves an artistic narrative, and the more emotive you can create the story,  the better a picture works.

We have been educated to the highest degree in the physical sciences, having 6 degrees between us. We both have PhD’s and with in-depth understanding of ecological and environmental aspects. We are equally at home in the studio mixing paints, or conducting experiments. Roy has written several scientific texts produced by the Royal School of Chemistry. Despite this we are constantly learning and constantly curious.

Individually and collaboratively we have exhibited (Denver, USA Tattoo in Art and Todi, Italy) and sold internationally. One piece rests alongside a Kandinsky artwork in a collection in Germany.
We take part and sometimes organise open studios, art trails and exhibitions for a large group of artists,
We exhibit in the Gallery in Corney Place, Penrith, Cumbria, CA11 7PX
We are invited to take part in other specialist exhibitions such as Contemporary Cloth at the Gallery 15th-29th February 2020.
Roy is a successful commercial, fashion and product photographer. He also turns his hand to Google Tours and Virtual reality shoots. An early exhibition in Bristol was more conventional and was based on photography using just the simple mobile phone. The exhibition was a competition called Phonography, at The Photo Gallery. His photo was selected to be displayed and was runner up in people’s vote, the image was called ‘Birthday’
