My work is concerned with portraiture, the trans subject, and the limits of representation. I look for vocabularies for reverence and desire in observational painting that uphold inscrutability and uncertainty as standards for access. The exploitative history of images of trans people in the US informs my warranted mistrust of digestible and abbreviated renderings of trans life. Each work presents a strategy for reconciling this caution with my love of figurative painting.
