Michele Alborg’s paintings explore place and loss using the medium of richly layered oils and acrylics. She’s interested in the possibility of paint: an exploration of mark-making, and how it combines with emotive figurative and representational imagery. Michele’s process involves sourcing images of landscapes, architecture and figures to amass a haunting library of references, along with delving into fantasies and dreams. Colour and brushwork are used expressively and playfully. Her compositions strongly reference both historical and contemporary painting and environmental design. Key influences are Peter Doig, Hernan Bas, Cecily Brown, Hurvin Anderson, and the post-Impressionists.
Michele studied visual art at New Mexico State University and has a master’s in painting from Emily Carr University in Vancouver, Canada.
She has participated in several group shows in Vancouver and her work can be found in private collections both in Canada and internationally. By day she’s a social housing planner and is also an avid gardener. Dahlias are (currently) her favourite flower.
