I was born in England but have been living in Holland for 35 years. I've been working for myself as a ceramic artist for 25 years. My passion is throwing so my sculptures are also all made out of thrown pieces. I also enjoy making unusual teapots. Last year i won two prizes in China with my teapots.
I get my inspiration from everywhere, from something i might have seen on the news to people waiting for a bus. I like to "use" my art for expressing an opinion, either political, environmental or whatever other random thought i might have. I also like to put some humor into the work even though it can be a serious subject. I'm hoping to make people think but with a smile on their face.
I studied textile design at Liverpool Polytechnic in England . When i came to Holland i went on a ceramic course basically just to learn the Dutch language in a not so boring way. I ended up enjoying it so much that i went to work in a production pottery so i could learn to throw pots better. It was very repetitive and dare i say quite boring but definitely a good way to learn. My job there involved throwing hundreds of the same pot week in week out. I still throw most of everything i make just because i really love the feel of the clay on the wheel but now i only make different things. I like the "hand made" look and i'm not trying to compete with shops like Ikea.
Teapot exhibition Shanghai for 7 years.
