Stephen Collins

"Stephen Collins pays homage to the giants of Modernist portraiture with his own portraits. Working from well known photographs, he injects a new, colourful light into the images and in this sense the subjects are freshly illuminated by his reverent gaze. The great artists in turn gaze outward, and in each case Collins has chosen to paint eyes as jewels. With this emphasis, the eye of the artist becomes a piercing lens, because it is this acuteness of vision that gave them prominence in the first place"
