Yulia Babanova is a painter living and working between London and Bali.
Mixing classical oil painting techniques such as glazing and impasto with experimental materials including crystals, volcanic sand or baking flour, Yulia creates mystical abstracts that are reminiscent of the relics of ancient magical ritual. Her works contain symbols drawn from Sacred Geometry and ciphered messages in her own alphabet that she created as a child. Elements of works are often meticulously painted only to be destroyed afterwards, leaving traces of the old to give birth to the new – a symbol of an infinite cycle of rebirth.
