Gizella Popescu

Gizella Popescu is a Romanian contemporary artist, currently living and working in Bucharest.

Inevitably, everything I create stems from my interests in aesthetic or ideological archetypes. Certain series explore a collective heritage, such as folklore, while other series target more contemporary typologies. I enjoy initiating dialogues with the audience, but with an open morality, as I don't see art as a manifesto, but rather as an invitation to exploration. Ideas vary from series to series and sometimes even from one piece to another, as I dislike repetition and constantly strive to introduce something new into my practice, whether it be technique or conceptual approach.
The artistic gaze surprises the characters in often distorted, ironic, striking and mystical scenes, inviting the viewer into a world that slightly resembles reality, but actually hints more at the complexities of the interior world, where freedom, thought, vices and emotions all cohabitate and communicate.
