Rafael Achury

I'm a 75 year old colombian architect, who lives in Bogotá. My father was an illustrator, and I chose to study architecture as a way to indulge in my passion for drawing and at the same time provide for a livelihood. A passionate reader (John Le Carre, Stanislaw Lem, Arnold Toynbee, the classics), and music listener (from The Rolling Stones to Scarlati, from salsa music (I love to dance), to jazz. Always curious to discern how to communicate abstract ideas sensorially, the way a medieval gothic master mason did. At this time of my life I've como to relish the challenge of illustrating an idea the way my father did, or of dissecting through drawing how an ordinary object is built (a pair of shoes, a nice coffee machine).

Studied in the german school in Bogotá (Colegio Andino, former Deutsche Schule). Abitur in 1967. Architect from Universidad de Los Andes, 1975. Fluent in english and german. Good reading skills in french. Wide experience in architectural practice (design and building), and urban and regional design. Drawing has always been a beloved professional instrument, but now I want to turn it into an introspective tool for getting to express reality.
