Alvaro Burgos

I was born in México City and took my first painting lessons at the Instituto Estatal de Bellas Artes (State Institute of Fine Arts), in San Luis Potosí, México. Although I have attended different fine arts institutions since then (currently enrolled at The Art Students League of New York), I consider myself a self-taught painter.

Art came as a natural way of expression to me since childhood, from drawings, paintings, installations, cards, posters, illustrated love letters, to scrapbooks. Artistic expression -fundamentally through color-, offered me the chance to approach and contest, intuitively, a rather strict cultural environment with instruments that validated process, transformation and uncertainty as adequate ways of being and understanding.

Given the important role that mutability and openness had in my painting from the very beginning, it’s not a surprise that abstract expression ended up being my most natural way of thinking and making art.
