Frederik Schnieders (1977, Belgium; Lommel) – painting
Inspired by the interpretations of impressionists and Renaissance painters, Frederik Schnieders chooses subjects from his immediate environment, the internet, video stills, or from his extensive collection of contemporary magazines. The resulting figures in his work engage in a continuous dialogue with the viewer. The characters in the portraits lead their own life on the open canvas and offer the viewer a pure, almost voyeuristic glimpse. We observe the same field of tension in the physical structure of the oil paint on the canvas. Frederik Schnieders builds up the paint layer by layer to produce a lush oasis of colour, which you as the viewer cannot ignore.
Frederik Schnieders completed his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp in 2002. It was where his love for portraiture and the figurative was kindled, during model drawing lessons. With oil paint as his medium of choice, he focuses on an intensive study of the medium, in which he constantly seeks a balance between colour and technique.
