Jared Gilbey

My current work is focussed on the landscape of life. I use trees to symbolise my emotions and experiences. Trees capture the essence of life itself; they are symbolic of growth, maturity and age. My fascination started when I lived in Australia for two years. I was captivated by the towering Australian hardwoods - the peeling bark of the blue gums that revealed bright oranges - almost mimicking the scale and the colour of the landscape itself. For more than a year I worked in forestry as a tree planter, planting thousands of trees by hand. This impacted on how I viewed the landscape and the very essence of how these magnificent structures hold on, with, or despite human intervention. Since returning to England I observe the seasonal cycle of deciduous trees with new eyes - winter branches bereft of leaves - skeletal structures where new life shoots forth, bringing hope and new beginnings. Without trees there is no hope. I paint in oils, either on canvas or wooden panels. I experiment with textures, impasto brush strokes and thin colour washes. Often many layers are rubbed back, revealing the satisfying form and structure of brush strokes or canvas, or merely exposing the wood and the emotion underneath.
