Guided by intuition and memory, Maku López paints from the unseen, celebrating her love for humanity and transforming archetypes, dreams, and unconscious impressions into layered canvases.
New York-based artist Maku López is rooted in memory, dreams, and the unspoken. Her work merges abstract forms with recognizable archetypes, revealing universal human experiences and emotional states.
Working with oil, oil stick, pigment, and charcoal, Maku begins each canvas with an intuitive field of color, often guided by music, before allowing figures, landscapes, and symbols to emerge. Her process is both meditative and instinctive, with each painting evolving into a visual conversation between conscious intention and subconscious revelation.
Maku’s visual language is grounded in transformation, interconnectedness, and the beauty of impermanence. The works on view balance vibrant energy with moments of stillness, reflecting the artist’s belief that “the painting knows more than I do.” Titles arrive like whispers, hinting at unseen narratives while leaving space for individual interpretation.
Her collection features works inspired by transitional moments, spiritual gateways, cultural icons, and the pure joy of color and texture.

Maku is a Spanish visual artist based in New York, she received a Bachelor of Art & Visual Media from SEK University, Segovia 2004 and a MFA on Photography at EFTI, Madrid 2006.

Her visual language is intimate, color-oriented, fresh, and with a sense of freedom that drives her work to have a unique energy.
